My name is Peter Catlin and
I am a sole trader with 24 years experience.
We have just relocated to Smallfield in Horley but are still working regularly in the areas we covered in the Croydon, Sutton and Wimbledon areas.
We made this move to improve the
company further giving us a larger and better workshop so we can increase our
manufacturing capability whilst keeping our overheads to a similar cost.
The family business, C. U. Engineers Ltd, was established in 1948 by my
grandfather and his brother. As my grandfather’s children grew they all worked
for the family business, and my father and two of the brothers became directors
of the business.
In 1985 I joined the firm, after leaving school, and started a five year
apprenticeship. C.U. Engineers closed and was re-formed by my uncle, Dennis
Catlin, under the name of A.E. Catlin & Sons a year later when my grandfather
retired.
I trained as a Metal Fabricator and Fitter over the next 11 years. In 1996
Dennis decided to retire and I became self employed, working with a friend who
had a small firm making and fitting steel products.
Just Metal was formed!

My first contact was for Merton Council repairing and maintaining fencing and
gates around its 56 parks. This then led to further contracts manufacturing new
gates & railings.
To develop the business I rented a workshop in Wallace Crescent and through
advertising and recommendations from a good client-base the business continues
to grow.
I employed an Uncle for two years (Who had previously worked for C.U. Engineers
and A.E. Catlin & Sons), but he has now retired. Now another Uncle has
joined me to carry on the family tradition.
We have now moved from our old
workshop in Wallace Crescent to our workshop in Smallfield in December 2008.
With the continued growth of the work we manufacture and fitting of fencing we
needed more space.
We now fabricate all the items myself but use contractors to install and repair
products. Architectural Metal Fixing Services have my full confidence. They are
extremely competent and we have built up a strong working relationship.
We take on a wide variety of jobs from small welding repairs right up through
the manufacture and installation of staircases to perimeter fencing for
municipal parks.
